MEDICATIONS AND ALTERNATIVES FOR
GETTING RID OF PARASITES
Note: Always research any medication or alternative before you take it. Doctors and Pharmacists do not always tell you all the possible side effects. Look up the drug or alternative online by searching by drug/alternative name and the keywords “side effects”. www.drugs.com is a great site. Click on ‘advanced’ on the site for a more complete list of all the side effects and reactions. If you develop any symptoms you will know where they are coming from. Forewarned is forearmed. My son almost died from a reaction to Asacol that the doctor did not catch. If I had read the advanced PDR I would have saved him a lot of pain and suffering. Every body is different. Do your research!
ALINIA (NITAZOXANIDE) – I recommend this medication. My son had the blatocytis hominis parasites and this medication worked for him. It is a very powerful anti-protozoal. It is fairly new compared to others. You take it for 3 days. Talk to your doctor about it and read up on the side effects. It has been found to be very effective against the majority of parasites and protozoa’s and also other causes of diarrhea. It is an anti-parasitic/anti-protozoal medication as opposed to an antibiotic. Taking antibiotics kills off the good bacteria in your colon, putting you at risk for a Yeast Overgrowth or even C-Diff. Alinia does not affect the good bacteria in your colon. My son took Alinia. We had him tested and the blatocytis hominis were gone. YEAH! He was very lucky to be rid of them with one course of the Alinia. It may take more then one time of taking this medication. What is really good about Alinia is that is also kills off the eggs that the parasites lay which will hatch if they are not killed off. http://www.drugs.com/cons/alinia.html
FLAGYL (METRONIDAZOLE) – I personally don’t recommend Flagyl: BUT I know that many people have been helped by it. Do your research before you try it. Most Doctors/GI’s will give this as a first choice to kill parasites. Flagyl is a powerful antibiotic. Some parasites, but not all, can be killed off by the Flagyl. The problem is that Flagyl also kills off the good bacteria in the colon and can lead to Yeast Overgrowth, furry tongue or even C-Diff. You could end up with worse Ulcerative Colitis symptoms from these. Flagyl also has many side effects. It made my son very ill and he flared even worse. But I also know people who had no side effects and were better after a course of Flagyl. Every body is different. http://www.drugs.com/pro/flagyl.html
OIL OF OREGANO: Not the kind you have in your kitchen but the hand- picked Mediterranean kind. The brand JOY OF THE MOUNTAINS is excellent. My son used this one. There are other good ones out there too. This oil kills not only parasites but yeast overgrowth and also has an antibiotic effect. One drop in water once a day is what you start out with. It is very strong and can give you a burning sensation. On your skin it can burn also. If you can’t stand the taste, you can put it in empty gelatin capsules (your doctor can give you a prescription). Because of the antibiotic effect, don’t use too much. You will end up killing off the good bacteria and risk coming down with C-Diff. Make Sure you take probiotics to keep the good bacteria levels up.
Activated Carbon: Can be taken in pill form. It is effective against bad bacteria, viruses and some parasites. You can take it in pill form or scrape the black parts of burnt toast off and add to a glass of boiled water. Don’t drink it when it is too hot. You don’t want to burn yourself or you child. Not everyone can tolerate activated carbon so consult your gastroenterologist or your alternative medicine doctor.
Herbs: Herbs are not known to kill off parasites but can lessen the symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis that are caused by the parasites. Read up on these and talk to a professional about possible side effects. If you suspect parasites start with some herbs until you are diagnosed positive for parasites and the type of parasite. What may work to kill off one type may not work to kill off another. Then talk to your parasitologist and/or your Gastroenterologist about the next course of action.
Grapefruit Seed Extract: Grapefruit Seed Extract has been shown to kill off some types of parasites. It is a citrus fruit and bioflavenoid. It does not kill off the good bacteria in the colon.
Berberine: Berberine is a natural antibiotic that has been shown not to hurt the good bacteria. Combined with other herbs it helps to maintain colon health. Berberine Complex includes extracts of barberry, Oregon grape, and goldenseal.
Probiotics: A probiotic yeast called Saccharomyces boulardii, can be useful. This is because some parasites are immunosuppressive. Immunosuppressive parasites can lower the levels of secretory IgA antibodies (sIgA) in your colon’s mucous layer, which in turn sets off Ulcerative Colitis symptoms. Saccharomyces boulardii probiotic is known to raise sIgA.
It is important, especially if you are on Flagyl to take more than one type of probiotic. This is because Flagyl kills off all of the good bacteria in the colon and this can cause C-Diff which can be deadly.
This site lists herbs and homopathy that can also be used to rid the colon of parasites: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/intestinal-parasites-000097.htm
